To be honest I had a lot of fun making my overzealous lollipop ladies. I took a great deal of pleasure in irreverently plundering artist's styles and cultural icons. I could nt stop making them! realised that each of my bolder and older ladies has the embodiment of subject very close to my heart - universally the subject of women and art and ageing.
Ever since Dante made Beatrice his vision of Wisdom in the Divine Comedy, painters have often suggested that beautiful women are the ultimate creative essence in their minds, beautiful, truthful and fertile.  My defiant complex lollypop ladies suggest an an even more beautiful alternative to little Beatrice's flushing cheeks. Women and age is a subject as rich as a fattening dessert: in fact such a mix of fear, vanity, loss, serenity, wisdom, freedom, defiance, humour and self-loathing is as beautiful as it gets! Getting over the hill ... means getting up the highest mountains with dignity humour and a few groans. Also with the increase in life expectancy over recent decades I wondered about the transformation to our societies and the slightly sexist ageist art world it's self!

Louise talks about her work on Saturday 24th August 3pm-4pm
